Elisa Birnbaum interviews the Right Honourable Paul Martin at his office in Montreal

We continued our travels across Canada, gathering stories and footage on social change movements, with a stop in Montreal last week to speak with former prime minister, the Right Honourable Paul Martin.

He shared with us what inspired his decision to introduce Bill C-38 (despite facing numerous detractors, even within his own party) which was then passed into law as the Civil Marriage Act on July 20, 2005.  In so doing, Canada became the fourth country in the world and the first country outside of Europe to legalize same-sex marriage nationwide.

Stay tuned as we produce the video/digital and print stories on Marriage Equality and LGBT rights, a movement that has evolved considerably over the years – and that is evolving still.
