Description
We learn about businesswoman and social activist, Viola Desmond, whose actions and bravery inspired Canada’s civil rights movement. In 1946, Viola challenged racial segregation at a theatre in Nova Scotia by refusing to leave a whites-only area and fought valiantly against the discriminatory laws in place at the time. Often referred to as Canada’s Rosa Parks, Viola’s story is a starting point from which we explore changemakers in Black Canadian history and Canada’s relationship with racial injustice.
